We’re all going on a summer holiday!

summer holiday

Finally, the summer months are upon us and many people are opting to holiday in the European Union (EU).

As of August 2021, green cards have been scrapped and you no longer need one to travel within the EU or European Economic areas.  Despite this, you must still check your insurance to ensure it meets the minimum requirements to travel.

Most motor insurance providers will give you cover for at least the minimum level required by EU countries.  Generally, you will get third party only cover, meaning your insurer will pay out if you cause any damage. This could be to another vehicle, person or to property, but it will not cover the damage on your own vehicle.

Some insurance companies will cover you on a comprehensive basis, or you may be able to increase the cover to comprehensive, but this may be at a cost to you.  If in doubt, check before you go.

As well as the EU countries, you may also be covered to drive in Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Serbia and Switzerland (including Liechtenstein). You should check your Certificate of Motor insurance, which will list the countries you are covered to drive in.

Before travelling you must check with us to clarify if there are any conditions or limits.

You may also be able to travel into the EU for work or carriage or passengers, but again, this is not guaranteed by all insurers and must always be referred prior to travel. Please call us for further information.

We would always recommend that you view the latest Government information prior to travel.  Please visit https://www.gov.uk/driving-abroad

In addition, we would recommend the following checks be undertaken before any long journey:

  1. Tyre Pressure – The correct tyre pressure is important to make sure your car can brake, grip and steer properly.
  2. Windscreen wipers and screen wash
  3. Oil levels
  4. Lights
  5. Engine coolant
  6. Tyre tread depth
  7. Fuel levels
  8. Emergency supplies

Fingers crossed for a busy summer season, but if you do get the chance to have a break away, please ensure you have the correct cover in place.

Bon voyage!
